Why do we have a light switch on our website? We once came across a news story about a website called “blackle.com” It’s a response to the claim that if Google changed the background on their home page to black, then it would save an enormous amount of electricity on a global scale, since computer screens wouldn’t be using so much power to light every white pixel.
Truth be told, this isn’t quite accurate. Most of the people using computer screens are currently using LCDs. And LCD’s backlighting is “on” at full power even when you’re displaying black colors on the screen. You just don’t see it, because the black pixel blocks out the back light. However, with the new AMOLED display technology, this claim could see some accuracy in the years to come.
AMOLED uses pixels that light up without the need for back lighting. Each AMOLED pixel is a self-lighting component. Therefore, if you were to visit Blackle.com, you would indeed save some energy.
While this may prove to be trivial at best, this notion in many ways represents what we at Novastar Energy are trying to accomplish. Not only are we interested in going Solar, we believe that wasted electricity is unnecessary. What’s the harm in practicing a frugal and efficient energy management around our homes?
At the very least, it will remind you to turn off that back patio light that’s been burning the midnight oil. Give that light bulb a break, and in doing so, you’ll save a little.
